You don't need the router. you just have to have a crossover UTP cable.
connecting your computer to your laptop.
now, go to your computer and set the IP address and the subnet.open control panel go to network and internet connections, go to network connection. now, right click the "local area connection" choose properties. double click on "internet protocol (TCP/IP)". click on "use the following IP address", and then set the IP Address to 192.168.1.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0. do the same thing to your laptop. change the IP Address to 192.168.1.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0

to enable printer sharing, go to your device where connected well to your printer. click on start menu and then click "printer and faxes" right click your printer icon, and then click sharing.

to enable file sharing, create a folder into your PC or laptop. right click the folder, click "sharing and security". dialog will appear, give check to "share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files".

I hope this will help...
thx
