How to use/set up accessory on the XT-8?
The orion xt-8 comes with a 'tool' used to help direct where you want the telescope to view.. I am not sure how to set it up, or even turn it on. Yes I have removed the piece of material blocking the battery from the device.. Any tips/suggestions.. Any tips on when would be the best time to view the Sun? Calendar wise.

I believe this is a standard red-dot finder. It's use should be covered in detail in the instruction manual Orion provides -- in my experience their manuals are very good, clearly written and well illustrated.
The main trick with any finder device is to point the TELESCOPE at a distant object (more than 1/4 mile away) and then, without moving the telescope, to carefully adjust the two knobs on the finder so that the red dot (or crosshair) is centred on whatever the telescope is pointing at. This is not the way most people try to do it, starting by pointing the finder at something and then being puzzled because the telescope is pointing elsewhere.
The Sun is pretty much observable any time, though it is better in the morning because the Earth's atmosphere is steadier. Be sure to use a proper solar filter over the front of the telescope, such as those sold by Jim Kendrick:
